Abstract

921,259. Pistons. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Jan. 12, 1962 [Aug. 28, 1961], No. 30901/61. Class 122 (1). A piston - and - ring assembly comprises a split bearer ring 9 having a smooth external surface 10 and an internal surface having annular or helical grooves 11 forming projections engaging complemental grooves 8 in the piston 1, the radial thickness of the ring being such that when the ring is fully compressed in the piston grooves the surface 10 remains proud of the piston. The ring 9 is screwed on or resiliently sprung on to the piston according to whether the grooves 11 are helical or annular In the arrangement shown, a ring 9 is screwed on to each end of the piston and the bottom edge 13 of the lower ring 9 is chamfered to act as an oil scraper. The surface 10 of the lower ring may be slightly conical with its greater diameter at the edge 13. Packing rings (not shown) are housed in grooves 3.
