Abstract

920,984. Deflecting propulsive jets. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Sept. 14, 1961, No. 33080/61. Class 4. A nozzle comprises a hollow casing member through which a fluid is discharged, a hollow support member connected by a first mounting to said casing member, and a hollow outlet member connected by a second mounting to said support member, fluid which is discharged from said casing member passing successively through said support member and said outlet member and being deflected depending on the positions of the support member and the outlet member relative to the casing member, one of said mountings permitting relative rotation between the parts interconnected thereby, and the other of said mountings permitting only relative pivoting movement between the parts interconnected thereby, whereby said outlet member is both rotatable and pivotable relative to said casing member, said nozzle having a drive device for effecting both rotating and pivoting movement of said outlet member relative to said easing member. The invention is particularly applicable to a direct lift engine mounted substantially vertically in an aircraft wherein the lower end of the engine casing 6 carries a bearing 10 to support a curved support member or duct 8, the axis of the lower portion of which is substantially parallel to but laterally displaced from the axis 12 of casing 6. An outlet or nozzle member 14 is pivotally mounted at 15 on member 8 for movement between an overlapping position indicated by lines 20, 21 and the lower position shown in chain dotted lines. An electric motor 27, mounted on easing 6, drives a worm wheel 26 which meshes with a gear ring 29 carried by member 8. A bracket 45 also carried by member 8 forms a trunnion support for a pinion 49 meshing with gear ring 29 and fast with a screw threaded shaft 48 upon which is mounted a nut 52 attached by bracket 54 to member 14. An annular ratchet-device, Fig. 3 (not shown), connects ring 29 to member 8 and stop members 42 on member 8 are arranged to abut a stop bracket 41 at selected positions. Operation of motor 27 initially causes free simultaneous rotation of members 8 and 14 about axis 12 without relative movement between gears 29 and 49 until one or another of stops 42 engages member 41 to arrest member 8. Because of the ratchet device the ring 29 now drives gear 49 to operate the screw jack mechanism 48, 52 to cause member 14 to rock about pivot 15 to a selected inclination.
