Abstract

920,888. Friction clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 34320/60. Class 80 (2). A centrifugally operated disc clutch is provided with two sets of control springs 23, 24 between the pressure plate 12 and reaction plate 14, the springs 23 being relatively weak and bearing directly against the reaction plate 14, while the springs 24, which are preferably stronger and also precompressed, bear against sleeves 27 with flanges normally clear of the reaction plate. As the centrifugal members move the pressure plate 12 into engagement with the driven disc 13 only the weak springs 23 are effective to give a light clutch engagement sufficient for small and slow vehicle movements as required for parking. As the clearance between the clutch elements is taken up the flanges on sleeves 27 engage the reaction plate 14 to allow the stronger springs 24 also to become progressively effective, with an initial abrupt increase of resistance, and an appreciable increase of engine speed is then necessary to produce further clutch engagement.
