Abstract

920,230. Centrifugal separators. COOPERS MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd.,C.M. STREETE, and S. P. WITCHELL. Jan. 19, 1962 [Feb. 7, 1961], No. 4603/61. Class 23. A cyclone for separating solids from gas comprises a vessel 1 having mounted therein an axial outlet tube 6 with an outwardlytapered portion 6 leading out of an untapered portion 5 and not less than twice the length of the untapered portion, and at least one fixed blade 3 which imparts to the gas, as it travels along the blade from its leading edge 2 to its trailing edge 9, a component of velocity which is tangentially directed with respect to the vessel so that the gas is given a whirling motion prior to entering the outlet tube. Three equidistantly distributed blades are mounted on the untapered portion 5 and extend to the inner surface of the vessel. The angle of incidence of the incoming laden gas on the leading edges of the blades may be nil or of small value, e.g. 10 degrees. The blades have a gradually increasing curvature from their leading to their trailing edges so that the tangential component velocity of the gas increases as it travels along the blades. Due to the whirling of the laden gas the solids are separated by centrifugal force and discharged through an outlet 11 in the conical bottom of the vessel whilst the clean air passes through the Venturi. The cyclone may be moulded from synthetic plastic. A number of cyclones may be connected to a common inlet manifold through which their outlet tubes 6 project into a common outlet manifold. The latter may be connected to an air inlet for an I.C. engine, a gas turbine or an air conditioning plant and may be provided with a paper filter. The solids are discharged from the cyclones into a common container. The cyclones may be arranged with their axes horizontal.
