Abstract
In a process for the production of endless polymaide profiles, one or more lactams with at least six ring carbon atoms are caused to polymerize by the addition of one or more alkaline reaction initiators, the reaction taking place at temperatures between 100 DEG and 270 DEG C., in the closed working space of a continuously operating gear pump which has a mixing and conveying action, and the resultant viscous melt is extruded through one or more nozzles. Specified lactams are S -caprolactam, caprylic and oenanthic lactam. Specified alkaline reaction initiators are potassium lactam compounds, potassium hydroxide, sodium methylate, sodium carbonate and calcium oxide. Polymerization activators, e.g. acid chlorides, acid anhydrides, carboxylic acid esters, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, cyanamides, carbodiimides and derivatives of urea, thiourea, isothiourea and guanidine and cross-linking agents, e.g. methylene-bis-caprolactam may be present in the reaction mixtures. The examples describe the preparation of filaments from:- (1) caprolactam and caprylic lactam and (2) caprolactam.
