Abstract
919,216. Hydraulic jet propulsion. HAMILTON & CO. Ltd., C. W. F. March 22, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10080/60. Class 114. A hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus for water-borne craft comprises an intake section 1 having a screen 3 of tapered bars 3a, 3b across the intake opening, a roto-dynamic pump 4 detachably secured to the intake section, a discharge section 28 detachably secured to the pump, drive transmission means 9 whereby power can be transmitted to operate the pump, and control means associated with the discharge section whereby the direction of the propulsive jet of water discharged from the pump can be controlled so as to propel the craft in a desired direction. The pump comprises impellers 12, 13 and guide vanes 14 in a casing 15. The discharge section includes a straightening vane assembly 29 and a replaceable nozzle 30 having a bore skew to the axis of the outer surface of the nozzle so that by rotating the nozzle 30 in the tail pipe 28 so as to vary the angular disposition of the nozzle, fine connections may be made to the steering trim of the craft. 33 is an off-take for an auxiliary water service pipe 34. Control means arranged rearwardly of the outlet-of the tail pipe 28 consist of a gate 37 for stopping and reversing the craft and a pair of deflectors 38 for steering. In its raised position the gate 37 offers no impediment to the free discharge of water from the pump 4 producing forward propulsion of the craft. When lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2, the gate 37 closes the outlet opening of pipe 28. By lowering the gate still further the outlet opening of pipe 28 is again opened for discharge of water therefrom but the direction of discharge is reversed by means of a recess 37b in the gate so that a reverse motion is imparted to the craft. The deflectors 38 are hinged on the cover 39 of the gate housing and are connected by arms 44 to a control shaft 45 by rotation of which the angular setting of the deflectors can be altered so as to alter the angle of discharge of the jet of water issuing from the tail pipe 28 and thereby change the direction of travel of the craft.
