Abstract

In a modification or improvement of the process disclosed in the parent Specification for making polycrystalline silicon-iron alloy sheet having grains orientated in the (110) [001] texture the cooling of the casting of the alloy from about 1400 DEG C. to about 1000 DEG C. is at a rate between 50 DEG C. and 130 DEG C. per minute which results in a fine dispersion of the manganese sulphide present in the alloy which retards normal grain growth during the final anneal and thereby enables a useful degree of crystal orientation to be produced. The metal alloy of composition 3.27% Si; 0.026 S; 0.057 Mn; 0.004 C; 0.0090; 0.002 Ni and the remainder iron can either be cooled directly from the liquid state or from a temperature in excess of that at which the manganese and sulphur are normally in solution, i.e. 1300-1400 DEG C. Cube textures as high as 80% are obtained when the alloy cooled at the above rate is heat treated within the range of 925 DEG to 975 DEG C. for one half-hour. Complete texture development can be obtained in five minutes if annealing temperature is raised to 1050 DEG C. to 1100 DEG C. Specification 845,167 also is referred to.
