A web A of a textile, a synthetic resin or a leather is delivered intermittently by feed rollers 7, 8 from a purching machine 1 on to an endless conveyer belt 4 which is driven intermittently in synchronism with the feed of the web by the rollers 7, 8. A cutting device 11 is mounted above the conveyer 4 so as to be horizontally adjustable longitudinally of the conveyer and cuts the web into short lengths 50, 51, 52. A second endless conveyer belt 14 is arranged around rollers 15, 16, 17, 18 so that the cut lengths of web pass off the belt 4 and on to an inclined portion of the upper run of the belt 14, as shown. The belt 14 is driven intermittently in synchronism with the belt 4. The rollers 15, 16 are mounted on a carriage (not shown) which is horizontally adjustable in the machine frame in order to vary the length of the inclined portion of the belt 14. A guide plate 41 is mounted on one end of the carriage for the rollers 15, 16 and the length of the inclined portion of the belt 14 is adjusted so that when the drive of the belt is interrupted the leading end of a cut length of the web is flush with the right-hand end of the guide-plate. A carriage 26 is mounted so as to be horizontally reciprocable in the machine frame beneath the belt 14. The carriage 26 runs on rollers and. is reciprocated by means of an electric motor mounted on. the carriage which motor drives a sprocket wheel also mounted on the carriage; the sprocket wheel engages a horizontal chain fixed to the machine frame. The carriage 26 travels between a position in which it is located wholly beneath the. belt 14 and the position shown. in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Rollers 28, 29 on the carriage 26 support an. endless conveyer belt 30 which is driven by the electric motor mounted on. the carriage when the latter moves from right to. left but not when it moves in the opposite direction i.e.. the direction of the. arrow H. Limit switches reverse the motor at each end of the carriage's run. As the carriage 26 moves in the direction of the arrow H a cut web length. 51 is deposited on the upper run of the belt 30 by the belt 14. On reaching the dotted line position the carriage 26 reverses its direction of movement and the belt 30 is driven whereby the length 51 is deposited on a receiving table 25. During this movement of the carriage the drive to the belts 4, 14 is interrupted and the device 11 severs a further portion from the web A. As a pile of cut web lengths is built up on the table 25, the table is lowered by means controlled by a photo-electric device. The table is mounted on wheels and can be replaced by another when a complete stack has been deposited thereon. In a modification the belt 14 is omitted.
