Abstract
918,696. Locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 27, 1959, No. 29304/59. Class 44. In a door lock adapted to be mounted on a door of a room and having combination locking means and a series of outside manuallyoperable members that must be operated in a predetermined combination from outside the room to set the combination locking means to release position, a series of inside manually - operable members are operable from inside the room that predetermine the combination in which the outside members must be operated in order to set the locking mechanism in a release position. As shown, a lock case 10 for mounting on a door D includes inside and outside push-button housings 11, 12 each carrying sets 13 and 14 of push-buttons. Each of the inside buttons comprises a locking part 17 movable with the button in a guide-plate 18 and in an opening 19 in a vertically movable fence 20. A gating 21 in the part 17 allows movement of the fence. when the push-button is in the non-depressed position. A detent 22 is assembled on the part 17 for sliding and tilting movement relative to the part 17 against a pair of springs 26 and 29, the arrangement being such that the springs hold the push-button in its normal undepressed position and in its depressed locking position. A reset plate 30 co-operates with lugs 33 and 34 on the detent 22 in the set position of the latter, but is releasable by a push-button operated cam 38 to release the detent from its set position. Each of the outside push-buttons is spring-loaded in its undepressed position and carries a pair of pivoted levers 42, 43 which are loaded by a C-spring 45. Both levers are movable through the case 10 and a reset plate 50. The lever 42 latches with a wall of the case 10 to hold the push-button depressed while the lever 43 is pivoted downwardly and coacts with one or other of notches 58 or 59 on the part 17 of the corresponding inside button, depending upon whether that button is in the normal or depressed position. The outside button may be reset by depressing a button 16 which operates the reset plate 50. The arrangement is such that when an outside button is depressed, corresponding to an inside button which has been depressed, a nose 57 of the lever 43 which engages the notch 58 or 59, engages the notch 59 and moves the part 17 towards its normal non-depressed position to bring its gating 21 to the position which frees the fence 20 with respect to that part 17. Depression of any outside buttons not forming the part of the combination set by the inside buttons effects further locking of the fence 20. A spring-loaded bolt 60 of the lock is retractable by means of inside and outside retractors 62, 63 and roll backs 67, 68 which are rotatable by separate inside and outside knobs 69, 70. A portion 66 of the outside retractor 63, co-operates with a portion 76 on the fence 20. A spring 77 positioned between the roll back 68 and the fence 20 is arranged for snap action from a normal position in which a part 79 engages the roll back 68 to a position in which the part 79 is disengaged from the roll back in the event of the knob 70 being rotated while the fence 20 is in dogging relationship with a part 75 on the retractor 63, through a fence portion 76. The spring 77 may be reset by the button 16. A reset lever 82 pivoted on the case 10 is operated by the retractor 63 to move the reset plate 50 to reset the outside buttons without resetting the inside buttons. A dead bolt 86 is operable by an inside handle 90 and an outside cylinder lock 87 through a cam 88. The dead bolt also acts through a portion 89 against the inside retractor 62 to move both bolts 60 and 86 to released positions. An indicator 91 indicates the locking position of the dead bolt.
