Abstract

A device, suitable for incorporation in an automotive cooling system, for separating a fluid, normally a gas, from a liquid of higher density and immiscible therewith, comprises a separating chamber having an inlet to divert a portion of the mixture from a main flow path and an outlet downstream of the inlet to return the diverted liquid to the main flow path, the rate of flow of liquid in the separating chamber being lower than that of the undiverted liquid in the main flow path whereby the immiscible and lighter fluid is allowed to separate from the diverted liquid and to collect in a space in the separating chamber above the inlet, and means for discharging the fluid from said space. As shown in Fig. 1, coolant from an engine flows from inlet header tank 12 through tubes 14 to discharge header tank 15, which is divided by partition 16 into a discharge flow compartment 17 and an air accumulation chamber 18. A portion of the coolant is diverted from discharge flow compartment 17 through opening 19 to air accumulation chamber 18 and returns to the discharge flow compartment through outlet 20. Entrapped air 26 in the diverted coolant separates and rises to be accumulated in air portion 27. In modifications the air separator is located away from the main radiator assembly (Fig. 2) or is incorporated on the intake side of the radiator (Fig. 3) where a pipe 55 lying in the flow <PICT:0918221/III/1> <PICT:0918221/III/2> <PICT:0918221/III/3> path of the incoming liquid passes a portion of the liquid to separator 52.
