Abstract

918,002. Hose couplings. STILE-CRAFT MANUFACTURERS Inc. Oct. 16, 1961, No. 37006/61. Class 99(1). . A coupling comprises a tubular plug 14, a tubular body 22 providing a socket 26, a sleeve 34 slidably mounted on the body, valve means operatively disposed between the sleeve and the body and latch means carried by the body selectively engageable with the plug, the sleeve being arranged to actuate the valve means to control flow through the body and plug and to actuate the latch means automatically and selectively upon slidable movement. As shown the sleeve 34 is slidable on the body 22 both axially and rotatively. The movement of the sleeve is controlled by a pin 44 moving in a C-shaped slot 41 in the body 22. When the sleeve is in the position shown the coupling can be made by inserting the plug 14 into the socket 26 and as the plug moves inwardly camming shoulder 21 engages the locking balls 30 to move them radially outwards into recesses 35 in the sleeve. When the plug is fully inserted the groove 16 is aligned radially with the balls 30 and the plug end 20 engages the 0-ring 40. The sleeve 34 is then rotated which cams the balls 30 into engagement with the groove 16 to latch the plug 14 in the socket 26. The valve means formed by ports 32, 33 and sleeve 34 remains closed. The sleeve 34 is moved axially from left to right of the Figure to open the valve means by allowing ports 32, 33 to communicate through recess 36, 0-rings 37, 38 providing seals. Rotative movement of the sleeve then locks the latter in position with the valve means open.
