Abstract
917,866. Ball joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Co. Ltd., Aug. 10, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958], No. 37967/58. Class 65 (2). The ball 2 is housed between two ring-shaped members 3, 4 retained within a cylindrical socket 5 by an internal shoulder 6 at one end and a closure cap 8 at the other, the member 3 being formed of nylon, polyurethane or other synthetic plastic material and having protuberances 10 which embed themselves in the member 4, comprising a pad of compressed woven textile material impregnated with lubricant, to restrain the member 3 against rotation. The pad, which is itself found to resist rotation in the socket, is restrained against radial inward expansion by an annular rib 9 in the cap 8, and has some degree of resilience so that it tends to compensate for wear in the joint. The member 3 may be in one piece or may be split into two or more portions. The protuberances may be of any shape, e.g. conical or pyramidal.
