Abstract

The dehydration of primary alcohols having at least 4 carbon atoms to obtain olefins is effected in the vapour phase over activated alumina, the flow rate being greater than that required for complete conversion and sufficient to ensure that the olefinic product contains at least 80% alpha-olefin. The temperature may be 250-400 DEG C. The alcohol may have the formula R1R2CH-CH2OH in which R1 is ethyl or a higher alkyl radical and R2 is hydrogen or alkyl, e.g. n-butyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl, n-decyl, n-dodecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-hexadecyl, or n-octadecyl alcohol, 2-methylpentanol, 2-ethylhexanol, or 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol. The olefin may be separated by filtration, after cooling if necessary or distillation.
