Abstract
916,866. Purifying waste brine from mercury cathode cells. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 43215/60. Class 41. Waste brine from electrolytic cells using a mercury cathode and containing chlorine and traces of mercury is purified and freed from mercury before recharging with brine, in two stages, (1) adding sulphide ions preferably as sodium hydro-sulphide in controlled amount until the redox potential measured against a KCl/HgCl cell is 0.85 to 0.93 v., (2) raising the pH to 7 to 8 and adding more sulphide until the redox potential is 0 to 0.2 v. Mercury sulphide is formed and is flocculated and removed as a precipitate, e.g. by adding a flocculating agent. For example, waste brine is blown with air to remove most of the chlorine, and then had a redox potential of 1.06 v. relative to a saturated KCl/HgCl cell, and a pH of 3. Sodium hydrosulphide liquor is then added until the potential falls to 0.85. Lime water is then added to raise the pH value to 8.5, the potential being then 0.3 v., whereupon more alkali hydrosulphide is added, reducing the potential to 0.2 v. A flocculating agent is added and the liquid slowly stirred, and after settling is filtered. Mercury content is reduced from 4 p.p.m. to 0.1 p.p.m.
