Abstract

916,650. Making ribbed tubes; flow of metal produced by rotary rubbing tools; mandrels. FAIREY CO. Ltd. Aug. 28, 1959 [May 29, 1958], No. 17211/58. Addition to 884,980. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a process for forming external fins on tubular stack according to the parent Specification, a mandrel 22 with an external groove or grooves 24 is inserted in the bore whereby during formation of the external fins, the tube metal is also caused to flow into the mandrel grooves to form an internal fin or fins. The workpiece 12, preferably of magnesium-beryllium alloy, is mounted in a lathe chuck 10 and spaced discs 18 with undulating peripheries, driven at high speed by a motor 14 are pressed into the surface of the workpiece to soften and extrude metal backwardly between the discs and form the fins. A milling cutter 19 follows the discs. Mandrel 22 is driven by motor 14 through gearing 26 and is fed axially through the workpiece as the discs are traversed by the lathe saddle 11. The mandrel grooves may extend throughout the length of the workpiece. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the mandrel has square threads and is non-rotatable. Helical fins formed internally may or may not be the same pitch as the external fins. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the mandrel has six circumferentially-spaced longitudinal grooves and is mounted for free rotation with the workpiece to form longitudinal fins in its bore.
