Abstract

Melamine is obtained from a gas mixture which contains melamine, ammonia, carbon dioxide and solid impurities, by absorbing the mixture in water, removing ammonia and carbon dioxide from the resulting solution by rectification, removing solid impurities, and crystallising and separating melamine from the solution. The temperature of the solution in the absorption step is preferably kept at approximately 65 DEG C. After rectification the solution may be clarified by treatment with an absorbing agent e.g. diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, or activated carbon. The melamine is preferably separated by crystallisation at below atmospheric pressure.
