A sewing-machine comprises a presser bar, spring means bearing axially on the presser bar, an abutment member engaging the spring means, a bracket fixed to the machine frame, cam means movably mounted on the bracket, a cam follower element associated with the abutment member and slidably constrained by guide means on the bracket for engagement with the cam means, and means on the bracket cooperating with the cam means for indicating the cam-adjusted position of the abutment member. The presser bar 20 is formed with an axial bore 31 containing a compression spring 32, the upper end of which abuts a shoulder on a pin 35 slidable in bore 31. A horizontal extension 38 of pin 35 passes through a vertical slot 46 in a bracket 40 secured by a screw 43 to the machine head 11. A dial 50, journalled on a horizontal stud 48 fixed in bracket 40, carries a cam-plate 51 formed with peripheral notches 52 disposed at progressively increasing distances from the axis of stud 48, the arrangement being such that extension 38 seats in the lowermost notch. Rotation of dial 50 thereby controls the pressure exerted by bar 20. The bevelled edge 55 of dial 50 carries graduations 57, each of which is displaced at 90 degrees from the notch to which it relates. The free end 61 of bracket 40 is shaped around the bevelled edge of dial 50, and is formed with an aperture 62 to indicate the graduation selected. The latter D corresponds to the notch nearest the stud 48 and providing the lowest pressure, to suggest the suitability of this setting for darning. A finger 26, extending radially frolm the presser bar and slidable between fixed lugs, is formed on its underside with a curved portion which co-operates with a pin 28 on a presser bar lifting lever 29 pivoted at 30 on the machine head 11.
