Abstract

915,664. Discharge tubes. TESLA, NARODNI PODNIK. May 19, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No. 18319/61. Class 39 (1). A hydrogen replenisher comprises a substance 8, capable of absorbing hydrogen, or binding it chemically, enclosed in a tubular metallic hood 7 which has an open end sealed to a hydrogenfilled discharge tube 4, and a closed end projecting therefrom so as to be in direct contact with the ambient atmosphere. The gap between the substance 8 and the hood 7 is of the order of ten times the mean free path of hydrogen molecules at the operating pressure, or less. The hydrogen-containing material may be Ti, Ta, Zr, La, Ce, Th or Pd or a hydride thereof, and may be in the form of a tubular body 8 or a helical or spiral wire, or may be in powder form in a tubular body made of another metal. As shown, the tubular hood 7 is sealed through the base 2 of a thyratron or tacitron together with contact pins 5, 6 and may itself constitute a contact pin. The hydrogen-containing tube 8 is supported by spacing rings 10, 11, ring 11 being porous. The hood 7 may be artificially cooled to maintain a temperature difference of 300‹ to 400‹ C. between tube 8 or hood 7. One or more tubular heat screens may be interposed between tube 8 and hood 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), the gaps between tube 8, the screens and hood 7 each being of the order of, or less than, the mean free path of the hydrogen molecules at the operating pressure which may be 0.4 Œ 0.1 mm. of Hg.
