Abstract
915,572. Leather, treating; chemicallyreacted paper. TOOTAL BROADHURST LEE CO. Ltd. March 9, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959; June 2, 1959], Nos. 1803/59 and 18736/59. Classes 76 and 96. [Also in Groups IV (a), IV (b) and IV (c)] Animal hides or skins are tanned and the wet strength of paper is increased by chemically modifying them by treating them with a substance other than bis-#-hydroxy ethyl sulphone which liberates divinyl sulphone under alkaline conditions and an alkaline or potentially alkaline catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, carbonate, silicate or bicarbonate, under such conditions that reaction takes place between the divinyl sulphone and the hides, skins or paper. Suitable divinyl sulphone release agents are compounds formed by reacting divinyl sulphone with secondary or tertiary amines or amine salts, e.g. bis-[#-pyridinium-ethyl]-sulphone diohloride, bis-[#-hydroxyethyl]-1 : 4- thiasanium dioxide chloride, bis-[#-trimethylammonium-ethyl]-sulphone dichloride and #- (diethanolamino)ethyl vinyl sulphone, Bunte salt having the formula SO 2 (CH 2 CH 2 S.SO 3 Na) 2 and compounds having the formula SO 2 (CH 2 CH 2 OZ) 2 , in which Z is a polybasic inorganic acid radical, e.g. sulphuric or phosphoric acid, a monobasic organic acid radical, e.g. formic or acetic acid, or a polybasic organic acid radical, e.g. benzene polysulphonic acids, or a salt, thereof which is soluble in water or aqueous alkali. The hides, skins or paper may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of the divinyl sulphone release agent which may be alkaline or the hides, skins or paper may be treated with alkali as a separate step. After impregnation, the hides, skins or paper may be dried by heating or dried and heated to a temperature higher than 100‹ C. without previous removal of the catalyst. Specifications 664,795, 846,875, 915,571, 915,573 and 915,574 are referred to.
