915,476. Bending wood. RADYNE Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 5, 1960], No. 34158/60. Class 145. A laminated racquet frame is made by bending the laminations 1 round a former 4, fitting neck and handle wedges 2, 3 in position, applying front and side clamps 6, 7 to the head of the frame and clamps 9, 15 with interengaging wedge surfaces to the shoulder and head of the frame and applying radio-frequency heating to cure the glue. The front and side clamps are pivoted at 25, 26 in order to accommodate differences in the laminations, the shoulder clamps are mounted on guide rods 11 and pressure is applied to the handle clamps through a thrust pad 20; additional clamps 23, 30 may also be applied. When the clamps are in position, hydraulic thrust is applied to them in the direction of the arrows T. Springs 21 between the shoulder and handle clamps facilitate opening of the clamps when pressure is released. For curing the glue, an earthed electrode is placed against one face of the racquet and a live electrode shaped to correspond with the shape of the racquet frame is pressed against the other face by a spring. A thermal barrier plate of material such as polytetrafluoroethylene is placed between the frame and the earthed electrode and a similar plate may be placed between the frame and the live electrode.
