Abstract
D 1,4-Androstadiene-3,17-dione is prepared by oxidising a D 4-steroid of the pregnane or androstane series having keto groups in the 3,20 or 3,17-positions respectively with the fungi Fusarium caucasicum in the presence of a saturated allosteroid to inhibit enzymatic conversion of the resulting D 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione to 1,2-dehydrotestolactone. The saturated allosteroid may be of the pregnane or androstane series having keto groups in the 3,20 or 3,17 positions respectively. There may also be present in the reaction mixture a saturated steroid of the 5b -pregnane or 5b -androstane series having keto groups in the 3,20 or 3,17-positions respectively. It is preferable to dilute the culture medium before the oxidation commences e.g. the culture medium may be diluted 20-fold. Suitable mixtures for use in the above process are progesterone and allopregnane-3,20-dione, D 4-androstene-3,17-dione and androstane-3,17-dione, D 4-androstene-3,17-dione and allopregnane-3,20-dione, and D 4-androstene-3,17-dione, androstane-3,17-dione and etiocholane - 3,17 - dione.
