Abstract

913,549. Swash plate pumps. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. July 22, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 23791/58. Class 102(1). A rotating cylinder swash-plate pump comprises plungers co-operating with a swash-plate through slippers wherein liquid is delivered from an auxiliary space during the delivery stroke of the plunger to form a liquid film on the bearing surfaces of the slipper. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the plungers 12 are stepped and reciprocate in stepped bores 11, the steps forming the auxiliary chamber which is in communication with the slipper pad 14 through passages 25, bore 24 and passage 26. The auxiliary chamber is separated from the pumping chamber by a plug 23 in the piston bore. A groove 20 extending over approximately half of the valve plate 15 is in communication with the outlet port 18 and feeds high pressure liquid to the auxiliary chamber through passage 19 during the return stroke of the plunger, this pressure assisting the return stroke. During the delivery stroke the passage 19 is closed by the valve plate and liquid in the auxiliary chamber is fed to the slipper pad provided with the various passages 27, 28, 30 to form the required film. In a modification, Fig. 6, the auxiliary chamber 40 is formed in the bore of the piston 12 by a fixed member 41 attached to the bore 11 by a spider 41b. The chamber 40 communicates with the passage 19, controlled by the valve plate as above, through passage 44 and groove 43.
