Abstract
912,905. Abrasive sheets. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No. 38773/59. Class 60. A coated abrasive sheet comprises a flexible backing and mineral abrasive grains firmly bonded thereto by a binder that is present in a sufficiently high ratio of total binder to mineral as to exhibit a glass value of not less than 5 units, as determined by a described reflectance test, the binder including uniformly distributed therein at least at its exposed surface an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or an aliphatic polyether compatible with the remaining binder constituents. The gloss value may be within the range 5 to 33 units, for example, from 6 to 12 with grade 120 abrasive grains, and from 9 to 18 with grade 240 to 400 abrasive grains. The binder surface may comprise a hardened phenol-aldehyde resin, which may be present in the sizing coat. The sizing coat may contain glycerine or an aliphatic glycol. The aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or polyether may be present in both making and sizing coats, in a sizing coat on top of a conventional making coat, e.g. of hide glue, or as a second sizing coat on top of a conventional sizing coat, e.g. of phenolic resin. Neoprene-treated cylinder paper is specified as a flexible backing, and aluminium oxide as the abrasive. Examples of aliphatic polyhydric alcohols and polyethers are glycols, e.g. ethylene, propylene, trimethylene, hexylene and octylene glycol; other alcohols, e.g. polyethylene, diethylene, polypropylene glycol and butylcarbinol; sorbitol, pentaerythritol, triethanolamine, polyvinyl alcohol, glycerol, cyclohexane-polyols, e.g. 1,3,5-cyclohexanetriol, inositol, alkylphenyl ethers of polyethylene glycol and dilaurate esters of polyethylene glycols.
