Abstract

In making objects of cured siloxanes, an organopolysiloxane, in which at least 0,5% of the Si-bonded radicals or atoms are unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals and/or H atoms, is subjected to the action of a quantity of high energy radiation insufficient to cause immediate gelation but sufficient to cause gelation by cross-linking after a time delay. The siloxanes used are liquids or gums and contain, in addition to the above, monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radicals. The siloxanes may also contain fillers. During the time delay the siloxane may be formed into its final shape as by moulding or extrusion. The irradiation should be effected in the absence of air or oxygen, and premature curing may be prevented by cooling, exposure to air or oxygen or by adding inhibitors, e.g. benzoquinone. Examples are given. The irradiated siloxanes will initiate polymerization of monomers polymerizable by free-radical mechanism and this property is useful in grafting polymers (e.g. acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate and methylmethacrylate) on to siloxanes.
