A section insulator for an overhead traction system comprising resinbonded fibre-glass rod insulators 5 covered with a non-tracking coating of P.T.F.E. or P.T.F.C.E., as described in Specification 904,944, is modified by the addition of at least one auxiliary runner 8 of wear-resistant material in parallel with each insulator rod 5, the contact surface lying in the same plane or slightly below that of the adjacent insulator rod. Each auxiliary runner comprises a bar 50 of toughened glass of rectangular cross-section and having cast metallic ends 51 slotted at 55, the cast ends being fixed in position by pouring Roses metal through apertures 53. In order that the running surfaces of the insulator 5 and its respective auxiliary runner 8 may be relatively adjustable, the slot 55 in the end of the runner 8 is mounted on the same spindle 90 as the insulator 5 but on an eccentric portion thereof. The spindle 90 is rotated until the running surface of the auxiliary runner 8 is level with or slightly below that of the insulator 5 and the spindle 90 then fixed in position by a grub-screw 89. Arcing horns 10 are fixed so as to lie on the inside of the auxiliary runner 8 and on the outside of the insulator 5. Only one auxiliary runner is shown associated with an insulator, but two may be used or the runner may take the form of an inverted channel member with one limb depending on either side of the insulator rod.
