Liquid enters upper chamber 1 in countercurrent to lighter liquid entering lower chamber 6 at 7. Contact takes place in the sloping pipe 5, which works as an extraction zone, and separation of phases takes place in the upper and lower chambers 1 and 6. A vent 4 for gases is provided, as gas may be introduced to increase the contact in the pipe. The pipe 5 may be of different shape, eg spiral or zig-zag.
