Abstract

911,448. Reverse gear. PARSONS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 4, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 42951/69. Class 80 (2). A bevel epicyclic reversing gear particularly for marine propulsion has a planet carrier 11 stationed by a hydraulically-operated bandbrake 27 for reverse drive, and clutched to a driving side-wheel 4 for forward drive by a centrifugally-operated multi-plate clutch 14. Centrifugal levers 17 are pivoted to the planet carrier and actuate the clutch through push-rods 19. On starting, with the driven side-wheel 3 stationary and the clutch 14 disengaged, the planet carrier 11 is driven at half the speed of the driving-shaft 5 which is speeded up until the clutch engages. This causes the planet carrier to rotate at the input speed, thus ensuring rapid full engagement of the clutch. Disengagement occurs when the input speed is half the engagement speed. The control lever controlling the application of the reverse brake 27 may also control a driving engine, movement of the lever in one direction from neutral merely opening the engine throttle, movement in the other direction first actuating a valve to apply the brake and then opening the throttle. The clutch 14 may be put out of action by sliding a collar 24 to the right so that the ends 21 of the centrifugal levers 17 are held by a groove in the collar and the clutch remains disengaged so that the engine can be run at high speed without moving the boat.
