Abstract

911,364. Toothed gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. Dec. 17, 1958 [June 12, 1958], No. 18886/58. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXXI] In a rack-and-pinion steering- gear for road vehicles, the rack 1 is resiliently urged towards the pinion 7 by a bearing placed opposite to the pinion and is additionally supported by a resilient bearing which may be composed of felt or other fibrous material which may be impregnated with a metal or a plastic material. The rack may be enclosed within a housing 3 and is connected at each end by a universal joint to a rod 5 which is connected to the road wheels or to a linkage connected with the road wheels. Sealing members 4 are provided between the housing and the rods. The rack may be urged into contact with the pinion by a resilient block 14 or by a spring and bearing pad 11. A resilient bearing 13 is provided in the housing 3 at a point remote from the pinion. A port 16 allows for relief of lubricant pressure within the housing 3. Specification 892,683 is referred to.
