Abstract
A cover comprises a mixture containing 60-90% of a polyolefin having a Vicat softening point greater than 83 DEG C., which can be crosslinked by irradiation, and an elastomer is moulded on to an elastic core and irradiated with high energy ionizing radiations to obtain a golf ball with improved hardness, resilience and cutting resistance which, due to the absence of vulcanizing agents, may be painted directly without the use of undercoats or chemical treatment. The irradiation is preferably carried out in the absence of oxygen whilst turning the balls to ensure even exposure. Polyolefins referred to are polyethylene and polypropylene; elastomers referred to are natural rubber, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-methacrylate and butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers, butyl rubber (a copolymer of an iso-olefin and a diene), polyisobutylene, copolymers of olefins, e.g. ethylene and propylene alone or with a higher olefin and graft polymers of natural or synthetic rubber. As a result of the irradiation cross-linking of the polyolefin takes place and there may also be cross-linking with the elastomer, especially in the case of butyl rubber and polyethylene. In the examples, the polymer composition also contained titanium oxide pigment. Radiations referred to are thermal neutrons, g -rays, X-rays, protons, electrons and helium nuclei; conventional sources may be used. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the treatment of golf balls but includes the treatment of compositions of a thermoplastic resinous material which can be cross-linked by means of ionizing radiations and a compatible elastomer. The invention may be applied to cables. In addition to polyolefins, the thermoplastic material may be gutta percha, balata, styrene-butadiene resins, butadiene-methacrylate resins and cyclized rubber. In a first example, a mixture of natural rubber, gutta percha, titanium oxide and zinc oxide moulded on to normal golf ball cores is irradiated.
