Abstract

An ozone-resistant elastomer comprising (A) a vinyl chloride resin latex specified below and (B) a rubbery copolymer latex of a butadiene specified below with an acrylonitrile, an acrylate, a maleate or fumarate, or a vinyl pyridine, specified below is made by blending the latices of (A) and (B), dewatering, drying and fluxing the products between 270 DEG and 380 DEG F. Specified vinyl chloride resins are polyvinyl chloride or copolymers containing at least 85% vinyl chloride with vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, acrylates, maleates and fumarates, vinylidene halides, allyl esters of inorganic or carboxylic acids and allyl ethers. Butadienes specified have the formula <FORM:0910807/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 independently of each other are any of a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom, an alkyl group with 1-4 carbon atoms, a methoxy or ethoxy group, a carbaloxy or acyloxy group or a cyano group where at least one is a hydrogen atom and not more than one is a cyano group. The butadiene comprises from 55 to 80% of the copolymer and 20 to 75% of the elastomer is (A). Acrylonitriles mentioned have the formula <FORM:0910807/IV(a)/2> wherein R4 is a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom, an alkyl radical with 1-8 carbon atoms. Acrylates specified are alkyl acrylates and methacrylates. Maleates and fumarates mentioned are diethyl maleate and fumarate and diethyl chloromaleate. A separate binary copolymer (C) may be blended with (A) and (B) produced by polymerizing a butadiene (specified above) with a methyl or a dimethyl styrene such that (C) is not more than 30% by weight of (A), (B) and (C). Dewatering the blended latices is achieved by shock-flocculation, e.g. feeding the latices into a brine solution acidified with acetic or sulphuric acid so that the pH is just below 7. The drying and fluxing is carried out in a single operation using an extruder drier (see Group V). The resulting product may be used to produce wire jackets, fabric coatings, cable coverings and shoe soles.
