Abstract

Graft polymers are produced by polymerizing either (i) 5-60 parts by weight of a monomeric C1-C4 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate or (ii) 10-200 parts by weight of a mixture of such acrylate or methacrylate and a monovinylidene hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon, the mixture containing at least 10% by weight of acrylate or methacrylate, in an aqueous dispersion for each 100 parts by weight of a rubbery polymer of an acyclic conjugated diene hydrocarbon present therein, the rubbery polymer having combined therein at least 50% by weight of the diene and having a second order transition temperature not higher than 0 DEG C. Rubbery p polymers specified are homopolymers of butadiene and isoprene and copolymers thereof with monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons, esters and nitriles of acrylic and methacrylic acids and small quantities of polyethylenic monomers, e.g. divinyl benzene and diallyl maleate. The graft polymers are used in blends with rigid homopolymers of monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons or halohydrocarbons or copolymers thereof with acyclic conjugated diene hydrocarbons, C1-C4 alkyl acrylates and methacrylates or an alpha-alkyl monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, e.g. polystyrene and a styreneacrylonitrile copolymer, the proportion of graft and rigid polymer in the blend being such that the rubbery polymer combined in the graft polymer constitutes 1-50% by weight of the blend.
