Abstract

A composition suitable for treating synthetic segmented elastomeric copolymer filaments comprises a textile oil having dispersed therein 2-20% by weight of finely divided particles of a colourless soap which is a salt of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Classification and a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, fatty acid containing 8-22 carbon atoms. Suitable textile oils are tallaws, naphthenic oil, sulphated and sulphonated oils, arometic and paraffinic oils and synthetic oils, e.g. silicones. Mixture of oils may be used, e.g. a boundary lubricant, such as boiled peanut oil, alkanol amine fatty acid condensates and polyalkylene oxides, may be mixed with a mineral oil preferably with the addition of a supplementary fluid lubricant, such as acetylated castor oil and long chain esters of sorbitan, which acts as a blending agent and dispersing acid. The particles of soap preferably have an average radius of 0,05-5 microns. Specification 779,054 is referred to.ALSO:Elastic filaments formed of a synthetic segmented elastomeric copolymer consisting of segments of a high-melting, crystalline polymer having, in general, as melting point of above 175 DEG C., e.g. a polyurea, polyurethane, polyamide, bis-ureylene polymer or polyester, alternating with segments of a low-melting, amorphous polymer having, in general, a melting point of below 60 DEG C., e.g. a polyester, polyether or a hydrocarbon polymer, are treated continuously as they are being spun with an anhydrous lubricant comprising a textile oil having dispersed therein 2-20% by weight of finely-divided particles of a colourless soap which is a salt of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Mendel<\>eeff Periodic Classification and a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, fatty acid containing 8-22 carbon atoms. Suitable textile oils are tallows, naphthenic oil, sulphated and sulphonated oils, aromatic and paraffinic oils and synthetic oils, e.g. silicones. Mixtures of oils may be used, e.g. a boundary lubricant, such as boiled peanut oil, alkanolamine fatty acid condensates and polyalkylene oxides, may be mixed with a mineral oil preferably with the addition of a supplementary fluid lubricant, such as acetylated castor oil and long chain esters of sorbitan, which acts as a blending agent and dispersing aid. The particles of soap preferably have an average radius of 0,05-5 microns. From 3,5-10% by weight of the anhydrous lubricant is preferably applied to the filaments. Examples describe the treatment of filaments formed by dry spinning a composition comprising an elastomeric polymer produced by reacting a polytetramethylene ether glycol having a molecular weight of approximately 1,000 with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate and p,p1-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and chain extending by reacting with hydrazine in dimethylformamide, to which a slurry of titanium dioxide in dimethylformamide and a solution of poly-(N,N-diethyl-beta-aminoethyl methacrylate) in dimethyl-formamide are added. Specification 779,054 is referred to.ALSO:Elastic filaments formed of a synthetic segmented elastomeric copolymer consisting of segments of a high-melting, crystalline polymer having, in general, a melting point of above 175 DEG C., e.g. a polyurea, polyurethane, polyamide, bis-ureylene polymer or polyester, alternating with segments of a low-melting, amorphous polymer having, in general, a melting point of below 60 DEG C., e.g. a polyester, polyether or a hydrocarbon polymer, are treated, e.g. by dipping, padding or spraying, with an anhydrous lubricant comprising a textile oil having dispersed therein 2-20% by weight of finely divided particles of a colourless soap which is a salt of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Mendeleef Periodic Classification and a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, fatty acid containing 8-22 carbon atoms. The particles of soap preferably have an average radius of 0.05-5 microns. From 3.5-10% by weight of the anhydrous lubricant is preferably applied to the filaments. The treatment improves the antistatic properties of the filaments. The filaments may be used in the covered or uncovered state in woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics alone or with other elastic or non-elastic filaments, e.g. nylon, in the manufacture of foundation garments, hosiery, gloves, sports wear, protective clothing, rainwear, skirts, sweaters, suits, coats, hats and other wearing apparel, surgical bandages, belts and straps, golf balls, sewing thread, hair nets, carpets and furniture upholstery, laundry bags, crash barriers, synthetic leather, hammocks and protective coverings, of which numerous examples are specified. Specification 779,054 is referred to.
