910,433. Grinding. SCHMIDT-KRAYER, A. March 15, 1961, No. 9436/61. Class 60. [Also in Group XXII] Pipe-bending mandrels having a circular profile of varying diameter over a centre arcportion and cylindrical end portions are machined by pivoting the workpiece within the path traced by a rotating tool the radius of which can be varied, the cylindrical end portions being machined by the same tool but the work then being moved rectilinearly. The workpiece 1, Fig. 9, is fixedly secured on a table 3 which is rotatable about a pivot on a compound slide arrangement. Where the material is removed in a turning operation a rotary toolhead 7, 8, surrounds the work and has a radially adjustable tool which is controlled through conventional means to give a uniformly varying diameter to the work through a template 15 which revolves with the table. If the mandrel to be produced consists of a number of angular sections of different radii the co-ordinates of the table pivot point may be varied during turning by templates 16, 17, Fig. 8, operating on feelers 13 which control through feed motors the positions of the elements of the compound slide supporting the work. Provision may also be made for vertical movement of the work or tool-head. Grinding. When the machining operation is effected by grinding a grinding-wheel 11, Figs. 4 and 6, is carried by a radially adjustable spindle mounted in a rotating head 12. The workpiece 1 is carried in a holder which pivots about the axis 2.
