Abstract

909,621. Fluorescent lighting units. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. July 6, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23668/60. Class 75 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] The unit comprises a parabolic reflector 7 and an elongated fluorescent lamp 1 having a portion of its tube free from fluorescent coating to form an aperture extending along the lamp envelope, one edge 5 of the aperture being located at the focus of the parabola, the lamp being tangential to the axis of the parabola at that point and the other edge 8 of the aperture being of the axis. The edge 8 is situated nearer to the apex of the parabola. The unit produces a flat beam of light. A reflecting coating may be provided between the lamp envelope and the fluorescent coating and may consist of a reflecting powder such as titanium dioxide or aluminium oxide or of a metal such as aluminium or silver. The particle size of the phosphor used for the fluorescent coating may be ¢-3 microns. To avoid blackening of the uncoated portion of the tube a light transmitting coating e.g. of antimony oxide or a very thin coating of the same or a different phosphor may be applied to the inner surface of the tube or to the area not coated with the main phosphor. For the same purpose, the tube may be made of lead glass. The unit may be used for road or airport runway lighting or for motor vehicle headlamps. A half-parabola reflecting surface may be used.
