Abstract

909,620. Automatic voltage-control systems. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. May 30, 1961 [June 1, 1, 1960], No. 19348/60. Class 38 (4). A control system for controlling the output of a generator is provided with means for preventing the output current of the generator from exceeding a predetermined value. The output from a generator is fed to terminals 1, 2 to feed a load, such as a battery, connected to terminals 3, 4. The generator field 13 is normally energized over a transistor 11, the base of which is connected to the collector of a further transistor 8. If the output from the generator rises above a predetermined value a Zener diode 9 becomes conductive whereupon the voltage distribution across resistors 16, 17, connected between the emitter and base of transistor 8, becomes such as to cause transistor 8 to become conductive thus causing the base of transistor 11 to be biased to reduce its conduction and to reduce the current flowing in the generator field 13. The emitters of transistors 8, 11 may be connected to terminal 1 by way of a common resistor to make the output of the generator dependent upon its speed or the upper end of potential divider 5, 6, 7 may be connected to terminal 1 to render the response of the circuit earlier than with the circuit shown in Fig. 1. The resistor 7 may be a thermistor situated adjacent the battery forming the load so that the control may be effected in dependence upon the battery temperature.
