Paper is softened by displacing a sharp fold across its area while it is supported only on its outer faces e.g. between two plates, pressed together and moved one over the other. Transmission of tensile stress past the fold line is thereby prevented. The process may be repeated with the fold in different directions and of opposite sense. Specification 727,261 is referred to.
