909,083. Nitrocellulose propellants. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. July 27, 1960, No. 26145/60. Class 9 (2). Nitrocellulose propellent powder grains are impregnated with a liquid explosive nitric ester by suspending the grains in water, incorporating a substantially water-immiscible solvent for nitrocellulose and for the liquid explosive nitric ester into the grains, impregnating the grains with a liquid explosive nitric ester dissolved in a substantially water-immiscible solvent for the liquid nitric ester and for nitrocellulose, the total amount of solvent employed being insufficient to dissolve the nitrocellulose, and subsequently removing the solvent from the grains. The nitric ester is preferably nitroglycerine, but may be a nitroglycol, ethylene glycol dinitrate, diethylene glycol dinitrate, triethylene glycol dinitrate or pentaerythritol trinitrate. The solvent may be ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropyl acetate, methyl isopropyl ketone or nitromethane. The solvent may be removed from the grains by straight or vacuum distillation or air stripping and the grains may be subsequently separated from the suspending medium by decantation, filtration, or centrifugation. The surface of the grains may be modified by treatment with diphenyl phthalate, dinitrotoluene, graphite or metallic salts such as potassium sulphate. Specification 593,793 is referred to.
