Abstract

An apparatus for the solvent refining of petroleum, particularly for furfural solvent refining of petroleum fractions has liquid furfural introduced into column 10 via line 32, while petroleum is introduced via line 34. Refined oil moves upwardly through the column and is recovered via line 35. Liquid furfural collects above plate 22 as a separate phase and is removed through line 36 to cooler 40 before reintroduction via sparger 29 or via line 42. Furfural via line 42 may be mixed with fluid withdrawn via outlet 20. The extract is finally withdrawn at line 45 for the separate recovery of oil and furfuryl.
