Abstract

908,891. Fluid-actuated valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 10, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1957], No. 38493/57. Class 135. A fluid flow regulator comprises a diaphragmactuated valve member 13 loaded by a spring 15 and which responds to demand pressure at a remote point in a delivery line 18 and in accordance with the velocity of flow through a Venturi 19 adjacent the regulator in the delivery line 18. A duct 18a connects the throat of the Venturi to a chamber 17 beneath the diaphragm so that on inspiration by the user of, e.g., breathing-equipment, pressure beneath the diaphragm is lowered to permit the valve to open. Once open the pressure in the chamber 17 will be related to Venturi throat velocity and on a high flow rate being demanded the pressure of the fluid at the expansion end 19a of the Venturi will be maintained at a correspondingly high level. In a modification the Venturi 19 is replaced by a converging injector nozzle in the line 18 with the nozzle outlet shown adjacent the opening of the duct 18a. It is not necessary for the duct 18a to be precisely opposite the throat of the Venturi or the nozzle outlet, it may be at any point in a low-pressure region affected by the high velocity of fluid flow.
