Abstract

908,252. Drawing wire; winding and reeling. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. June 19, 1961 [March 24, 1960], No. 22113/61. Class 83 (4). A wire handling apparatus comprises a fixed head, a flier assembly journalled in said head, a first take-up block secured to said head, a second take-up block disposed axially adjacent to said first block, wire guide means on said flier assembly arranged to wrap wire around said first block and to unwrap wire from said first block on to said second block, wherefrom the wire convolutions are collected to form a package, and support means for said second block extending through said first block from the fixed head to the second block for orbiting of said wire guide means with respect to said blocks. The column 2 of the machine supports an overhanging head 1 disposed over a well 3 in which is a support structure 4 for pallet 5 on which a package C is formed. The support can be moved by a fluid cylinder 9 from the tilted position shown in Fig. 1 to a horizontal position, for removal of the pallet 5 and package C, and is arranged to rotate slowly to distribute the wire convolutions and form a package of the required shape and size. The wire is guided on to the pallet by rolls 7 and a funnel 63, below the funnel are fingers 65 which hold up the wire while a completed package is removed. The flier assembly 15 comprises a housing 34 and plate 35 mounted on a shaft 17 driven by a motor 26 through a speed reducer 23. Mounted on the plate 35 are three skewed sheaves 36, 37 and 38 and journalled in the housing 34 is a shaft 39 on which are mounted planet wheels 40 and 41. Fastened to the head 1 is block 48 which has a bevelled shoulder 53 and a sun-gear 45, and journalled on the lower end of the shaft 17 by bearings 51 and 52 is a block 47 to which is secured a sun-gear 46. The sun-gears and planet wheels are connected by gear-toothed belts so that as the flier rotates the block 47 is held stationary by the epicyclic action of the gear train. The wire W to be drawn and packaged passes through a bore 29 in the shaft 17, round a sheave 30, over the first skewed sheave 36, through a die 56 and straightening rolls 54 and on to the upper block 48. Due to the bevelled shoulder 53 wire is continuously pushed off the lower end of the block and passes over the sheaves 37 and 38 on to the lower part 47 of the block from which it falls on to the pallet 5. A pair of spring-loaded shoes 61 press on the wire on the lower block in order to build up a single layer of several turns on the block. To maintain the wire tightly round the upper block 48 the lower block 47 may be made of slightly larger diameter or the gearing may be arranged to slowly rotate the block 47 to wrap the wire W thereon at a rate greater than the rate of unwrapping from the part 48.
