Abstract
A non-fibrous regenerated cellulose film has a uniform small content as anchoring agent of an initially water-soluble, thermosetting polyamido-polyamine-epichlorohydrin reaction product in thermoset form. The anchoring agent is conveniently made by reacting a water-soluble polyalkylene-polyamine with a water-soluble dicarboxylic acid to form a water-soluble cationic polyamido-polyamine, and reacting this with epichlorohydrin, the latter reaction being stopped short of gelation so that completion of the cross-linking reaction and conversion of the reaction product to insoluble gel form can take place after application of the anchoring agent to the film, when the film is heated and dried. A proportion of the polyalkylene polyamine can be replaced with a water-soluble alkylene diol, e.g. glycol, 1,3-propane-diol, diethylene-glycol, and tetraethylene glycol. Specified dicarboxylic acids include succinic, adipic, pimelic, and azelaic. Polyalkylene-polyamines mentioned include diethylenetriamine, tetraethylene pentamine, the propylenediamines, 3,31-iminobispropylamine, and, in general, any water-soluble polyamine having a functionality of at least two for carboxylic acids and a third functionality for epichlorohydrin as cross-linking agent. The film may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of the reaction product as anchoring agent and dried at 150 DEG -250 DEG F. to thermostat the agent at least to an insoluble gel state. The aqueous solution may also contain a plasticizer, suitably a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol, and desirably has a pH of at least 6, suitably 6-11. A hydrophobic organic topcoat may be applied to at least one side of the treated film, and specified topcoats include nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, polyethylene, deacetylated chitin, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, rubber, chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride, butyl methacrylate, moisture-resistant lacquers, waxes, e.g. montan wax, beeswax, and carnauba wax, and printer's ink. Topcoats may be applied from hot melt, organic solution or aqueous emulsion by roller-coating, spraying, or impregnation. Specification 865,727 and U.S.A. Specification 2,573,956 are referred to.
