[Also in Group XXII] An hydraulically operated shears comprises a cylinder 15 for operating the shear blade 12, and opposed cylinders 45, 46 operating workclamps 39, 40 for the bar-stock 38. The cylinder 45 is mounted on a slide 13 which carries the blade 12, cylinder 46 being mounted on the shears-frame 10. Pipelines 47, 48 connect cylinders 45, 46 to cylinder 15 which is supplied by a pump 16, 17 driven continuously through a belt 22, gears 20, 21 and a crank &c. mechanism 18, 19 by a motor 23. Closure by a solenoid 31 of a by-pass valve 26 between the pump and a reservoir 28 operates the shears, the stroke of which is adjustable by a stop 35 driven through gears 36 and a screw 34 by a motor 37. Return strokes of piston 14 are assisted by fluid-pressure supplied behind the piston at 33.
