Abstract

907,928. Making compound plates or tubes. WALLER, W. M., and WALLER, P. H. Oct. 2, 1958, No. 31544/58. Class 83 (2). A laminated e.g. plate or tube comprises a layer of a light metal, i.e. aluminium magnesium, titanium or their alloys, bonded to a layer of a non-light metal which is of or may be brought by mechanical working to a tensile strength greater than that of the light metal and can be brought to a still greater strength and hardness by heat treatment at up to 500‹ C. with or without quenching. The non-light metal is a copper or nickel base alloy and may be as described in Specifications 706,502 and 761,561. The bonding process may involve rolling, drawing, welding or spraying followed by application of pressure. The heat treatment may be carried out before or after bonding. One of the layers may be pre-rolled and then bonded by rolling at say 90 degrees to the direction of pre-rolling. Laminated tubing may be made of sheet material seamed by welding and in seamless form may be made by drawing a laminated disc or drawing cast tubes forced one within the other.
