Abstract

907,709. Coking processes and apparatus. I-N STITUT NATIONAL DE L'INDUSTRIE CHARBONNIERE. Oct. 22, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 33838/58. Class 55 (1). Briquettes or lumps of coal are carbonized while being transported through an elongated chamber 15 in a fluidized bed of sand or like inert particulate material, the coked product being separated from the sand on a vibrating screen 25. The sand is heated in a chamber 11 before entering the carbonizing chamber by hot gases from a burner 10 and the sand separated on the screen 25 is returned to the chamber 11 in a channel extending through the carbonizing chamber. During the carbonization the supply of fluidizing gas to the carbonizing chamber may be interrupted and the fluidized bed collapsed to allow an increase in the time for the carbonization of the briquettes or lumps of coal embedded in the sand.
