Abstract

907,689. Sampling liquids. GRIFFIN & GEORGE (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd., MARTIN, A. J. P., and PALMER, R. C. April 19, 1961 [April 21, 1960], No. 14100/60. Class 106 (5). A liquid sample is introduced into a gas chromatograph column by means of a capillary tube 10 having a gold plug 13 and a side port 14, the filled tube being inserted through a slit in a self-sealing rubber or plastic closure 21 into a chamber 17. The tube is a sliding fit in a passage 18 at the bottom of the chamber and when it is at the position of Fig. 4, and gas is supplied through a pipe 26 the gas enters the port 14 and sweeps the sample into the column. The tube is attached to a plunger on a holder having fixed to it a sheath 38 and a copper collar 12 on the tube prevents it from contacting the sheath as it is pushed down the sheath into the chamber. The tube 10, sheath 38 and chamber 16 may be made of stainless steel. As an alternative to the plug 13, the walls of the tube may be squashed together and spot-welded to each other. In modifications, an open-ended capillary tube containing the sample may be placed in the tube 10 between the port 14 and the lower open end of the tube or the lower open end of the tube 10 may be so located that the gas stream from the pipe 26 has an ejector action on the sample.
