Abstract
907,535. Nuclear fuel elements; handling nuclear fuel elements. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Feb. 9, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 8462/59. Class 39 (4). A fuel element assembly comprises fuel rods 1, 2 hanging from supports 4, 8, each support having horizontal arms engaging corresponding arms on adjacent supports, and banding 13 encircling the supports and clamping them together. The supports shown are cruciform, the arms having either projections or recesses; in an alternative embodiment, the supports have three arms coupled by coupling pieces, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown). Cruciform spacers are provided at the lower ends of the rods. Lugs 14 support the assembly in slots 21 in the wall of a fuel channel and are used for handling by a bayonet-type lifting tool 24; the lugs and the outermost supports have grooves to receive the banding cable 13.
