906,376. Coin-freed apparatus. ICE-MATIC Ltd. Oct. 17, 1960 [Aug. 16, 1960], No. 28373/60. Class 27. A protective device for an automatic refrigerated vending machine having a thermostatically-controlled refrigerating plant and a refrigerated magazine compartment comprises a relay 12 which is energized through a holding circuit 18 when the machine is in normal service and when de-energized operates means 15 to inhibit the operation of the machine, and a timing switch 24 and timing device for energizing the relay for a predetermined time while the holding circuit is open. The relay 12 has a contact 13 for closing the holding circuit which includes a thermostatic switch 19 in the magazine compartment, a contact 14 controlling an indicator lamp 17, and a contact 15 controlling a circuit 23 leading to the vending apparatus of the machine. In operation, the refrigerating plant is switched on and when the temperature in the compartment drops to a predetermined level, the switch 19 closes. The timing device is then set to operate after a predetermined time, depending on the food to be sold, and the switch 24 is closed to connect the supply lines 16, 21 through the relay which closes the contacts to make the holding circuit, light the lamp, and supply power to the circuit 23. The opening of the magazine for stocking the packages to be sold may cause a rise in temperature in the magazine and switch 19 to open. However, the relay will be maintained energized by the switch 24 unless, after the predetermined time, the switch 24 opens before the refrigerating plant has reduced the temperature in the magazine to close the switch 19. If the switch 19 has not closed within the time, both switches 19, 24 will be open at the same time and the relay de-energized, thus opening the circuit to the lamp and vending apparatus which is then incapable of vending goods.
