Abstract
Ceramic friction bodies, e.g. for brakes or couplings are manufactured by plastifying a dry mixture including by weight, 20 to 50 parts of fibres, e.g. asbestos, wool, slag wool, sillimanite wool, 20 to 50 parts of a glass frit, e.g. comprising borates and/or silicates and/or phosphates, 10 to 40 parts of a powder mixture metal and/or a metal oxide powder mixture 1 e.g. one or more of iron, copper, zinc, brass and bronze, or the oxides of titanium, antimony, zinc, tin and lead and 0 to 15 parts of powdered graphite and/or a powdered sulphide or nitride, and pressing the plastified mixture into shaped bodies at a pressure of the order of 1000 atmospheres thereafter drying them at approximately 200 DEG C. and firing in air at between 550 DEG C. to 650 DEG C. If desired, pressing and firing may be effected simultaneously, and a plastifying agent e.g. aluminium hydrosilicate bentonite, may be added to the mix beforehand.
