The transponder of the parent Specification is modified for use in a secondary radar system in which recurrent sets of radio-frequency pulses are transmitted, each set consisting of at least three pulses. As shown in Fig. 1, the output of a receiver 11 in the transponder is supplied to a winding 13 on a magnetostrictive delay line 12, the windings 14 and 15 being spaced to provide a delay corresponding to the interval between the first two pulses A and B of a set A, B, C. The pulse A is a control pulse radiated from an omni-directional aerial and the pulses B, C, are interrogating pulses radiated from a directional aerial. The windings 14, 15 are connected together so that a phase-reversing amplifier 18 is supplied with a negative-going pulse A, and an amplifier 17, which is not phase-reversing, is supplied with a pulse B-A representing the difference between A and B which is positive when B is greater than A, these pulses occurring simultaneously. The outputs of the amplifiers 17, 18 are applied to respective grids of a pentode gate 19. The amplifier 17 may be biased to pass a positive-going pulse only when it exceeds a predetermined amplitude or alternatively amplitude selection may be performed by suitably biasing the suppressor grid of the pentode 19. The negative-going pulse from 19 is supplied to an inverting and delay device 20 which supplies a positive-going pulse delayed with respect to its input pulse by a time equal to the interval between pulses B and C which is supplied to one grid of a pentode gate 21. The voltage induced in a winding 16 on the delay line has a negligible delay with respect to the winding 14 and includes a positive-going pulse corresponding to C which is amplified at 22 and applied to another grid of the pentode 21. Owing to the delay produced by the device 20 the pulses on the two grids occur at the same time and produce an output pulse which triggers the transmitter 23. The pentode 21 or amplifier 22 may be suitably biased to enable triggering to take place only when the amplitudes of the two pulses are in predetermined relation. A further transponder for use in a system transmitting recurring sets of four pulses is described, Fig. 3 (not shown).
