Abstract

906,166. Sorting photo-electrically. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. April 19, 1961 [June 17, 1960], No. 21459/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). In order that the presence of a container component, e.g. a can end, differing from a predetermined kind can be detected photo-electrically the component is marked according to a code with a substantially clear and colourless medium containing a luminescent substance. In the embodiment described the markings take the form of parallel lines or of concentric circles, the spacing of the lines or circles being indicative of the product or of the decoration on the component, and are caused to fluoresce under the action of ultra-violet light. In one embodiment two photo-cells are used in conjunction with a movable apertured plate. If the lines appear under the apertures both cells give an output which is fed via an amplifier and pulse shaper to a coincidence gate. If an undesired component is viewed there will not be coincidence, and a visual warning and automatic ejection device are operated. In a second embodiment only one cell is used, the time taken for two markings on the steadily moving component to pass the cell being indicative of the type of component viewed.
